How to change your App Store country

Apple lets you move your account to a different country’s App Store. Here is what it requires, what it costs, and — because most people arrive here from a missing app — what it does not fix.

Do this first, or the change will fail

Apple states the requirement in one line:

Before you update your location, you must spend your account balance and cancel your subscriptions.

The full list of prerequisites, as Apple gives them:

• Spend any balance remaining on your Apple Account. Even a few pence will block the change.
• Cancel any subscriptions that block a country or region change, and wait until the end of the subscription period. Cancelling is not enough; you wait it out.
• Wait for any memberships, pre-orders, movie rentals, or Season Passes to complete, and for any pending store credit refunds to process.
• “You may be required to enter a valid payment method for your new country or region.”
• Redownload your apps, music, movies, TV shows and books first, because “some types of content might not be available in your new country or region”.

Two things can stop you outright. If you are in a Family Sharing group, Apple says you “might not be able to change your country or region” at all. And if you have less store credit than the cost of a single item — so you cannot spend it down to zero — Apple’s instruction is to contact Apple Support.

The steps on iPhone or iPad

Apple’s documented sequence:

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap your name, then tap Media & Purchases.
3. Tap View Account. You might be asked to sign in.
4. Tap Country/Region.
5. Select your new country or region.
6. Tap Change Country or Region.
7. Tap your new country or region, then review the Terms & Conditions.
8. Tap Agree in the upper-right corner, then tap Agree again to confirm.
9. Select a payment method, enter your new payment information and billing address, then tap Next.

There is an equivalent path on a Mac or PC through the Apple Music or Apple TV app, and on the web at account.apple.com under Personal Information → Country/Region.

Step 9 is where most of the difficulty lives, because a payment method for the new country generally means a card issued there with a billing address there. Apple’s own footnote offers the alternative:

If you don’t want to enter a payment method, wait until you’re physically in your new country or region, then create a new Apple Account.

Read plainly, that is Apple describing this as something you do when you move.

What it does not change

If you came here because a betting app is missing from your store, this is the part that matters.

It does not change where you are. An operator decides who may open an account and place a bet using its own checks — residence, identity documents, payment instruments, and often the IP address you connect from. Installing an app is not permission to use it. An account that fails verification is an account whose withdrawals do not complete.

It does not extend anyone’s licence to you. Apple’s guideline 5.3.4 requires real-money gaming apps to be licensed “in the locations where the app is used” and geo-restricted to those locations. Reaching an app licensed elsewhere does not bring you inside that licence, and using a service not licensed for your territory may put you outside your own country’s law.

A VPN does not do it either. This is the most persistent bad advice in this niche. Your storefront follows your Apple Account’s country setting and the payment method attached to it, not the country your traffic appears to come from. A VPN moves your packets; the store follows your account.

What you would be moving to

For the two apps we track, the destination storefronts are Nigeria and Tanzania — Apple lists the App Store as available in both. What each listing actually contains, including the seller of record and what the relevant gaming regulators do and do not say about it, is on the availability page and on each app’s own page. Read those before spending a subscription period waiting for a storefront change to clear, because for one of the two we could not confirm who the publisher is.

A cheaper thing to try first

Both operators run a browser-based service, and Safari can add any website to your home screen so it opens from an icon. That needs no storefront change, no new Apple Account and no foreign payment method, and you undo it by deleting an icon.

We cannot tell you how well either operator’s mobile site works, because their domains do not resolve on our network — we are not going to describe sites we have not loaded. But the asymmetry stands on its own: the browser route costs nothing to test, and the storefront route costs your balance, your subscriptions and possibly a month of waiting.
